Arguably the most important character for the Felis Umbra Parfums lore, The Matriarch is the representation of Ava, a beautiful solid black cat who happened to be the mother of most of the cats I own.
Ava passed away over the winter, and being a sentimental fellow, it really bothered me that her baby Hamilton, Lucy's brothers and sisters from her litter, and now she herself all succumbed to not-so-peaceful deaths.
The Matriarch acts as a god-like entity in the Felis Umbra universe, being a Lovecraftian-style necromancer/shapeshifter. She resides within The Penumbral Cradle, where she creates most of the feline characters I use as muses and faces for my fragrances, referencing her motherly status.
These felines are divided between two collections, The Penumbral Cradle and The City of Infinite Twilight. The Penumbral Cradle is home to felines inspired by elements from horror, mythology, abstract concepts, among other influences, while The City of Infinite Twilight acts as a more realistic setting for more anthropomorphic feline characters, referencing my fondness of Parisian architecture and culture, as well as acting as a representation of the perpetuity of life and an endless longing for the nostalgia of days past.
The Matriarch's scent is heavily inspired by, and a dupe of, Killian's Black Phantom. There is one key difference, however: The Matriarch differentiates itself with added nuance from an added coffee tincture that I make in-house. The variety of coffee I use varies, allowing for a bit of specificity and natural notes of the coffee used for the tincture to subtly come through in the finished fragrance, enhancing the original Black Phantom DNA.
Each tincture batch will be documented within the listing of The Matriarch, for those looking to test different nuanced batches, or Materializations, of The Matriarch.
Currently, Materialization I is still underway, using beans that give caramel and nutty scent notes, with Materialization II using espresso beans from Montenegro beginning very soon.
The idea for this came to me from both Ava herself, with her origins being rather ambiguous, and to play into the shapeshifter/necromancer idea a bit further with the idea of a end of a Materialization and a new tincture used signifying a change in her form for her next appearance.
